Vancouver-based, B.C. born and raised Jaclyn Guillou (pronounced Ghee-you) is an award winning vocalist who is releasing her debut studio album with a tour of Western Canada this month. Her international band includes New York City vibraphonist Tom Beckham, Belgian pianist Bram Weijters, Vancouver bassist Michael Rush and Vancouver drummer Joe Poole.

The tour began with a teaser show in Surrey at the Newton Cultural Centre on April 5 and an official Vancouver CD release launch at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre on April 6, and will conclude with a performance in Kamloops at Caffe Motivo on April 19. The tour celebrates the release of her highly anticipated album, To The City, which features top Canadian and American musicians from Portland, New York, Vancouver and Toronto. Her tour brings her to Creston on April 9.

A recipient of the 2009 CBC  Galaxie Rising Star Award, Guillou has attracted the attention of all sorts of music lovers with her diverse and eclectic style and has a sound that is most comparable with crossover artists and female jazz singersongwriters such as Norah Jones, Melody Gardot and Madeleine Peyroux.

“I wanted to make an album of original work that was able to capture the essence of the jazz tradition and integrate modern lyrics with my own personal stories,” Guillou said. “Creating new original music is my true passion and I have taken a complete hands on approach while following my own intuition and creative source throughout the entire process.”

Michael Rush, co-producer and arranger of To The City, and also bassist in the band, was Guillou's right hand man and was able to contribute invaluable talent in making it all come together, especially with the organization of incorporating sound engineer John Raham who used a vintage approach by recording the album to tape and recording Guillou's voice with a 1940s RCA microphone.

To The City features 13 songs, eight of which are original tunes. Special guests include some of Canada's best-known jazz talent, including Bruno Hubert, Chris Davis and Evan Arntzen, and a duet with singer Denzal Sinclaire.
