Martin Sheen stars in The Way

If all the people who have travelled along at least a portion of the Camino de Santiago go to see The Way, the movie is sure to be a success. For centuries, pilgrims have followed the Way of St. James, a route that takes travellers through France to the town of Santiago de Compostela on the west coast of Spain.

The Emilio Estevez-directed movie features the director’s father, Martin Sheen, in the starring role. Sheen plays Tom, whose son (played by Estevez) has died in a storm in the Pyrenees mountains while he was following the path to Compostela, where relics of St. James are said to be held. Tom, an American doctor, goes to Spain to collect his son’s body, but makes a decision to continue the pilgrimage to honour his son’s memory.

For local residents, fortunately, the pilgrimage to the Tivoli Theatre is less arduous, but viewing The Way also promises to be rewarding. The Way is the first presentation of 2012 by the Friends of the Cinema. Tickets are available at the door for the screening on Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m.
