The cinematic version of a novel by one of Canada’s most respected authors is the next Friends of the Cinema presentation on Monday. Barney’s Version, based on the book by Mordecai Richler, tells the story of a 65-year-old who reflects on his life as its end approaches.

The hard-drinking, cigar-smoking Barney Panofsky has much to think about. He’s a television producer with an obsession for hockey and he’s made more mistakes in his lifetime than he should have. Also, he’s had plenty of successes and failures throughout the course of his life, including three marriages.

Paul Giamatti stars as Barney and his father is played by Dustin Hoffman. They are joined by a cast that includes Canadian favourite Paul Gross and directing legend Atom Egoyan. Giamatti won a Golden Globe award for his performance.

Barney’s Version will be presented on April 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Tivoli Theatre. Friends of the Cinema is a non-profit group that donates net profits from the eight films it shows annually to local organizations.
