Colin Firth and Helena Bonham Carter star in The King's Speech

With a dozen Oscar nominations to its, The King’s Speech will be presented on Feb. 21 by the Friends of the Cinema.

Colin Firth stars as King George VI, a prince who was thrust unexpectedly onto the throne when his brother abdicated. With a stammer that gave him a decidedly un-kingly presence, George received help from a speech therapist and went on to inspire his nation during the Second World War.

Directed by Tom Hooper, The King’s Speech has a stellar cast that has captured nominations for best actor (Firth), best supporting actor (Geoffrey Rush) and best supporting actress (Helena Bonham Carter). Hooper is nominated as best director and the movie is considered a frontrunner among best picture nominees.

Booking what has since become the most talked-about movie of the year for one night only has caused a bit of a headache for Friends of the Cinema organizers. Anticipating a full house on Monday for The King’s Speech, spokesperson Jean Mutch said special arrangements are being made for season’s pass holders.

“From 6:45 to 7 p.m. only pass holders will be allowed in to claim seats,” she said last week. “From 7 to 7:30 p.m. people will be admitted on a first come, first served basis.”

Booking movies is often done months ahead, and Mutch said it was impossible to predict just how popular the movies might become.

“We are hoping for a full house, and that all season’s pass holders will get seats,” she said.

The King’s Speech will be shown at 7:30 p.m. at the Tivoli Theatre. Friends of the Cinema is a non-profit group that donates net proceeds to local groups, including Friends of the Library and the Creston Community Auditorium Society.
