Montreal artist Randall Finnerty has been selected by the Kunze Gallery to be the first artist in its featured artist series. His show, "Strained Nature", will be a selection of 11 of Finnerty's recent works.

Finnerty is a visual artist who has been working for a number of years with charcoal on paper, portraying a cast of animal and human characters that are often set in wilderness environments or on the periphery of human settlements. Rooted in his experiences of growing up in northern Ontario, these images reflect upon a disjointed relationship with nature. Flying objects, highways and power lines are the tentacles that project outward from civilization into the natural world. By placing animals among the detritus of civilization, they bear curious witness to the things in which humans engage.

Originally from Timmins, Ont., Finnerty studied art at York University, Sheridan College and Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto. He has lived and worked in Montreal since 1992. Finnerty and his wife, Loren Williams, also an artist, frequent the Creston Valley regularly to visit friends and family. He works at the National Film Board of Canada where he has worked on numerous award winning animated short films. He has exhibited his work in group and solo exhibitions across Canada, and his work has appeared in a variety of art publications. Finnerty's work is held in important public and private collections, including the Canada Council Art Bank and the Cirque du Soleil.

"Strained Nature" runs at the Kunze Gallery (215 Northwest Blvd.) from July 31-Aug. 31. A meet the artist event will be held at 6 p.m. July 31.
