Friends of the Cinema’s next presentation is 20 Feet From Stardom, which tells the true story of the backup singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 21st century.

Award winning director Morgan Neville focuses attention on a group of African-American women who formed the background music for many well known hits but never received public recognition for their talent or the contributions they made. These talented artists spent their careers harmonizing and supporting the careers of others.

The film is a tribute to the voices that helped to shape popular music and the role of backup vocalists on the music industry. These gifted artists, including Darlene Love, Lisa Fischer, Judith Hill, Claudia Lennear and Merry Clayton, have a unique story to tell about living in the shadows of those who “made it”. The film is a poignant portrayal of living life 20 steps from stardom.

20 Feet From Stardom runs at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Prince Charles Theatre.
