The Creston Community Band, often the guest at local functions to help with fundraising, is pleased to announce its first Christmas concert on Dec. 2 at the St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church hall.
Sing along with guest vocalist Vern Gorham and enjoy the Creston Hand Chime Choir as it makes its concert debut. The concert format will be similar to the coffee house concerts in which the band has performed with other groups. St Stephen’s Presbyterian Church will operate the concession, with tables set about for a relaxed intimate atmosphere. Concession proceeds will go to the Philippines relief fund.
The present Creston Community Band was formed in 1989 by a small group of dedicated musicians who saw a real need to provide appropriate music at various town functions. Band members come from all parts of the community, and even as far away as Cranbrook. The band even has a bit of international flair with one members making the journey from Bonners Ferry, Idaho.
Under the direction of Monte Anderson, the Creston Community Band has a large repertoire that includes up-beat swing, jazz, Dixie, film and television tunes, Broadway hits, classical, traditional and dance tunes. It plays something for all musical types and tastes.
The band is always looking for new members. Some present members had not played an instrument for 30-plus years and were amazed at how quickly it all came back. So, if you are a recent player or have not played since school (however long ago that was), from piccolo to tuba, come talk to members and they will help you get back into the “swing” of things.
The band has recently moved to St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church hall where it can store its music library, drums, stands and other equipment. The move allows the band to practice (Monday evenings at 7 p.m.) and perform in the same location, while continuing to support local functions.
