Two comedies, one set in outer space and the other in the Creston Valley, are next in Footlighters Theatre Society’s 29th season, with auditions being held 7 p.m. Dec. 11 at Prince Charles Theatre.

Both plays are by Jason Smith and Suzanne Chubb, whose first co-written play, Almost Golden, debuted 10 years ago this month. The upcoming comedies will be their sixth and seventh plays produced by Footlighters.

Smith will direct both, starting with Star Trak, a science fiction play that lovingly pokes fun at the Star Trek franchise. It was originally planned for April 2020, but was postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and will now run April 4-7, 2024.

The cast of the sci-fi spoof requires adults of all ages, as well as children who could range in age from seven to 15.

“It’s been a long wait, and we’re so excited to finally see this coming to the stage,” says Smith. “We’ve created some fun characters that really play up the stereotypes and tropes that have become associated with the show over the years.”

The historical comedy, as yet untitled, has been written specifically to coincide with Creston’s centennial celebrations. Rather than a reenactment of actual history, the plot follows the exploits of a group of youths in 1924 Creston.

As with Star Trak, it requires a cast of children, teens and adults — including two men who can portray Laurel and Hardy-type roles.

“The period sets up so many opportunities for unique adventures and humour,” says Smith. “And it’s a great opportunity for some young performers to really shine.”
