Did you know this weekend will be the 8th Annual Art Trot Fundraiser at the Community Complex? I know! I didn’t realize that it had been happening for so long. It has been interesting watching the evolution of this event and how well it has been accepted into the community as a regular happening – knowing that 100% of the money raised goes towards The Creston and District Society for Community Living’s Therapeutic Riding Program and keeps riders fees affordable. We have a few art items adorning our place as I’m sure many of you do as a result of Art Trot.

The fundraising event includes a silent auction of items donated by the community and these range from original art work to limited edition prints, jewelry, fabric art, gift certificates from local businesses and everything in between. Previous years have seen birdhouse decorating competitions with rows of avian abodes lined up like brownstones on Coronation Street except if decorated by Da Vinci through Picasso. This year sees a slight switch as they have provided birdfeeders but it will be as equally amazing to see the creativity of the community in this people’s choice competition. I wondered myself if the provision of so many bird accommodations and now eating establishments contribute to the success of the Creston Valley Bird Fest in May by encouraging relocation of our feathered friends to the Creston Valley – kind of an Aves Economic Action Partnership. Perhaps I should wonder to myself less…

Anyway, the event is Saturday, March 3rd from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sunday, March 4th, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm in the Erickson Room. New this year is A Taste of Creston! Held on Sunday, March 4th from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm, local food providers will have delicious samples for tasting. Tickets may be purchased at the event.

With the Olympics wrapped up now, perhaps you still have a yen to watch sports. Happening this weekend as well, is the Butterfly Men’s Bonspiel with some pretty high end curling with 48 teams from BC, Alberta and the USA competing. Incidentally, immediately following the Butterfly, with barely enough time to re-pebble the ice, the Creston Curling Centre hosts the BC Masters Championships. This is shaping up to be one of the biggest Masters in BC with 20 teams, 10 in each gender, competing with the leaders going to the Canadian Masters. Pretty cool. If hockey is your bag, catch some Atoms level stick work as Creston Valley Minor Hockey hosts the Atoms Banner Tournament in the Johnny Bucyk Arena. If your preference leans towards bobsleigh, luge, skeleton, snowboard or snow cross, well, the best we can offer at this point is watching kids careen down any of the toboggan hills around the Rec Centre.

Also forming part of your visit here this weekend is a cruise through the Creston Valley Farmers Market in the Creston Room on Sunday from noon till 3 pm. You can always count on something there to look at, purchase or nibble on plus it is Seedy Sunday so make sure to check out that table. Their mission is to help connect local seed growers with gardeners and enhance the local backyard gardener’s life through easy access of seeds and agricultural knowledge. See you there!
