February was a busy month.

Thanks to Howard Boyle for finding a home for our old piano, thus making space for an electronic one. Thanks to Win Dinn for helping to make the replacement keyboard affordable. Joanna Wilson our regular pianist gave it a two thumbs up. Music is a big part of our program and we’re looking forward to having fun experimenting with all its features.

One evening in February you would not have been able to tell that our TAPS space wasn’t a fancy restaurant. The atmosphere created by decorations, menu and music made it seem as if we were in a fine dining establishment as we treated couples from the TAPS program to an after-hours Valentine Dinner. Traci Stonehouse took portrait photos of the couples, staff and volunteers cooked and served while Ilana Cameron enhanced the romantic atmosphere with piano tunes and singing. Thanks everyone for making this a special event.

There are many people to thank for the success of our New Van Fundraiser ‘TARTS ’n TUNES’ held on Feb.16th at the Rotacrest Hall Upper Level. Thanks, all who attended, your participation and donations made it a great afternoon.

Youth from the Wildflower School rehearsed with TAPS seniors to prepare for this event and brought youthful enthusiasm as they sang, performed, served and interacted with the crowd and our seniors. TAPS choir and band members along with the Ukuladies led singalongs while Lana from Valley Community Services managed the technological side of things so words were displayed for the singers. Thanks to our volunteers who helped set up and worked in the kitchen preparing for the Tea. Thanks to Gail Kitt for skit development, costumes, and direction. Thanks to Save On Foods and Pealow’s for the refreshment donations. Thanks to Lorne Eckersley of the Creston Valley Advance for his coverage of the event and its purpose, and to Anita Horton offering to sponsor two ads.

Awareness of the need for fundraising for an additional vehicle for our TAPS program inspired the staff, volunteers, and participants to create this event and were joined by the Krafty Kronys. All the rehearsing, baking and preparations were worth it. Approximately $1500 was raised towards the purchase of a new van. Thanks to all who donated and continue to do so. We are now $43,200 closer to our goal of $67,000.

February was a busy month. Wildflower school visited for a morning with our seniors. Playing games was the theme and we all agreed that what we’re appreciating about this intergenerational activity is that it is much more than ‘an activity’. Relationships develop over regular interactions and shared experiences. Getting to know each other brings a feeling of a big extended family. We appreciate the dedication of their teacher Linda Faranowski who works with the staff to make this a meaningful experience for all of us.

TAPS is a program of Valley Community Services.
