“The heart that gives, gathers.” Lao Tzu

Public libraries were built on the principle that, by sharing what we have—no matter how much or how little—we can all be lifted up.

The first public libraries were established through the tireless work of volunteers, many of whom devoted their entire lives to the cause of the free public library. Today, libraries rely primarily on local taxes to operate but, here in Creston, the original spirit of volunteerism, of giving from the heart for the betterment of all, remains a powerfully driving force.

The giving starts with our dedicated and talented staff whose contributions and devotion to the library far outweigh the modest salary that they receive. They give extra every day because they believe in the power of the library to make a positive difference in the community.

The library has a veritable army of volunteer shelvers who devote their free time each week to maintain order on the shelves. One exemplary volunteer, Marion Sawall, has been at this task for more than forty years—approximately as long as I have been alive! I am totally inspired, and humbled, by her example.

Other volunteers work as Friends of the Library, raising funds to help support programs and activities such as Summer Reading Club. Still, others serve as board members, ensuring that the library is serving its mission faithfully and efficiently.

Countless members of the community give through donations, including both monetary donations and library materials such as books and DVDs. How generous is this community? Consider the case of one individual (who prefers to remain anonymous) who donates $5000 each year towards children’s services and programming at the library.

Often the generosity comes via local service groups whose members are devoted to a better, stronger community, such as the Rotary Club, Creston-Kootenay Foundation, or the Lions’ Club. Even businesses get into the act, discounting services or donating items for special events or programs.

How uplifting it is to work for an organization that inspires this incredible spirit of giving and sharing!

In 2012, my family and I arrived in Creston for the first time. After six wonderful years, we will be leaving at the end of August in order to pursue new adventures.

Since my arrival, I have endeavored to serve this marvelous enterprise faithfully, with my whole heart and mind. But I know that my contribution is insignificant compared to the kindness, support, and goodwill that I have received from the many individuals I met through my work at the library and as a member of this community.

Our family grew up loving the public library. Over the past six years, we have grown to love Creston as well. We are truly blessed to know all of you, and we will always treasure our memories of our life here.

On behalf of Minh, Nghi, Max and myself, thank you for all that you have given us.

Aaron Francis is the Chief Librarian at Creston Valley Public Library. He is currently reading The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula Le Guin.
