Nelson-Creston MLA Michelle Mungall will be hosting a ceremony on Nov. 18 in Nelson to present Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals to four outstanding citizens, from four communities across the riding.

“All four medal recipients have done so much for this region,” said Mungall. “It is wonderful to have the opportunity to put on an event to honour them, as well as include all those who were nominated and the community.”

The medals will be presented to Joan Reichardt of Nelson, Shannon Nickisch of Sirdar, Bruce Walker of Kaslo and Dorothy Hearn of Salmo. The presentations will be made at a ceremony in the Hume Room at the Hume Hotel in Nelson from 2-4 p.m. The ceremony is open to the public and light refreshments will be served.

The four recipients were chosen through a process designed by Mungall that involved a riding-wide call for nominations, a community-based short listing committee and an online and telephone vote. The process was designed to be as democratic as possible and in the end involved over 800 people.

“It was the members of the community that selected these recipients, and I would like to invite anyone who is able to attend the ceremony to come and help me recognize the work that these wonderful people have done to make Canada a better place,” said Mungall.

Those planning to attend are encouraged to call Mungall’s community office at 1-877-388-4498 to RSVP.
