Join one of Canada’s most renowned naturalists, Dick Cannings, on a bird watching adventure in our local wetland.

The Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area is proud to present Bird Watching in the Wetland with Cannings on the morning of March 16. Cannings will be in Creston presenting at the Wildsight speaker series on March 15 at Rotacrest Hall at 7 p.m., so why not keep this knowledgeable birder a day longer so that he can share is passion for birds with us? And the wetland is a perfect place to do this.

Cannings is a consulting biologist and teacher of field ecology at the University of British Columbia, as well as one of Canada's foremost birders and natural historians. He co-ordinates the Christmas and backyard bird counts, the eBird program, the B.C. Owl Survey, and has compiled the Breeding Bird Atlas. He is going to talk about his most recent book, Flights of Imagination, at the March 15 presentation.

Many birds start to migrate through the valley in March and there are year-round residents that are also a pleasure to see. So, although snow may still be on the ground, we are going to get out into the wetland and see what we can see. For the event on March 16, please meet at 7 a.m. at the Summit Creek area in the Creston Valley Wildlife Manage-ment Area, at the pullout off Highway 3 just west of the turn off to West Creston Road. We will do some bird watching around Summit Creek and then head north along the dyke into Leech Lake Area. The event will wrap up around 10 a.m. and is by donation. Please dress appropriately for the conditions.
