In life there comes a point when one has to say goodbye. For two individuals of the Kootenay East Regional Hospital District (KERHD) board they are not only leaving behind a legacy of commitment to community but the two decided to show their thanks in a very distinct way.

Former board chair John Kettle, also the former director for Regional District of Central Kootenay Area B, and Heath Slee, former Regional District of East Kootenay Area B, both elected to make an individual $500 gift to the East Kootenay Foundation for Health (EKFH).

The $1,000 combined thank you is being directed to EKFH through the Starlite Campaign. The two have chosen their gift to be dedicated to purchase critically needed equipment for the new intensive care unit currently under construction in Cranbrook.

“It is an absolute honour for EKFH to accept these gifts,” said EKFH executive director Donna Grainger. “John and Heath have been very supportive of our work in the past and their donations certainly leads by example that they believe EKFH has a strong future going forward.”

The two are no strangers to the strength a new intensive care unit plays in the quality of care in the East Kootenay. The KERHD board was one of the driving forces behind the original ICU concept followed by a unanimous approval for reallocating original ICU equipment funding to assist in relocating the pediatrics unit to the vacated ICU space, and merge this space with the existing obstetrical unit. In order to accommodate the reallocation, EKFH agreed to take on a major capital campaign for fundraising for the ICU equipment.
