Robert Hynes and Penny Karpowich recently received St. John Ambulance Lifesaving Awards.

Along with six others, Creston’s Robert Hynes and Penny Karpowich received a St. John Ambulance Lifesaving Award by the Alberta council for assisting at a Crawford Bay plane crash last year.

On Aug. 30, 2014, a number of people were on the Kokanee Spring Golf Resort course when they witnessed a plane crash into a line of trees while it attempted to land at the airport. The small plane was extensively damaged and on fire. Rescuers rushed to help the pilot and passengers. Only minutes after the two casualties were removed from the wreckage, the plane exploded.

Despite CPR and emergency first aid being administered at the scene, the passenger did not regain consciousness. Without the lifesaving efforts of the many people who administered first aid to keep the severely burned pilot from succumbing to his injuries, a second life would have been lost. For their knowledge and use of first aid in saving and attempting to save a life. Penny and Robert received their awards in October.

St. John Lifesaving Awards are presented every year to those courageous individuals who go out of their way to help others in desperate need of help — often very dangerous situations.
