If you want a chance to get really hands-on with some pretty cool things from the past, here it is — the Creston Museum is getting ready to open for the summer with its annual cleanup day.

“This is the day when we get rid of a winter’s worth of dust from the exhibits,” said manager Tammy Hardwick. “So when we say ‘hands-on day’ what we really mean is ‘dusting, sweeping, and straightening day.’ But, in order to do that, you have to get really up-close and personal with things that, generally, we try discourage people from handling.”

This is the one time each year that you can pull out a display case and check out the things that are inside it. Or find out for yourself just how heavy that two-man chainsaw really is. Or take a really close look at the dishes, needlework, medical tools or whatever else grabs your interest. Just clear off the cobwebs while you’re at it, OK?

Heavy lifting is definitely not required, as there are many exhibits in the museum that contain only small objects.

Bring a broom, bucket and/or rags, rubber gloves if you want them, but no cleaning solutions — rags lightly dampened with clear water is all we use. Everyone is welcome, and kids must bring a grown-up with them. Coffee, juice and goodies will be provided for volunteers.

For more information or to sign up, contact Hardwick at mail@creston.museum.bc.ca or 250-428-9262.
