The Creston Valley Public Library presents the fourth segment in its Healthy You, Healthy Community complementary health care speaker series on at 7 p.m. March 23 with “Mood Food: What Food Cravings Say About Your Health”, featuring registered nutritional therapist Jessica Shearer.

Many of us are consumed by intense cravings, whether it's for a sweet treat or savoury snack. Shearer says that cravings are the body's way of telling us that something is missing.

“By sending the messages and signals to the brain, our bodies are seeking to maintain a balance of minerals, vitamins and energy levels,” she said. “Food cravings can be related to something as simple as mood, but may also be a sign of deficiency or disease.”

We all recognize the undeniable urge to gorge on chocolate, slurp on a sweet drink or stuff ourself with bread, pasta or potatoes, but what are these cravings telling us about what’s going on inside our body? So whether it’s a cool cube of ice or the fiery spice of tikka masala you long for, bring your personal food craving tales to this talk and learn what they may be telling you about your health.

Shearer is a Creston-based clinical herbal therapist and registered holistic nutritionist with a passion for health science, herbal therapy and nutrition. After graduating in Vancouver she has returned to her hometown of Creston. She hopes to contribute to the community she loves as a health consultant and educator.

The Creston Valley Public Library is presenting this complementary health care series, Healthy You, Healthy Community, to help you make the best decisions for your own well-being. The series will highlight naturopathic medicine, herbal medicine, acupuncture and more.

Watch for these upcoming talks: “Introduction to Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine” with registered acupuncturist Zea Friesen (April 14) and “Sleep Blues – Stop Tossing and Turning”, with Dr. Kim Masuch (April 27) and more. All talks take place at the library and are free of charge. For more information, call the library at 250-428-4141.
