Representatives of local non-profit groups gathered June 27 to receive much-needed grants, totalling $37,300, from the Creston-Kootenay Foundation (CKF).

CKF is a local community foundation, established in 2005, with the purpose of professional management of endowment funds and the distribution of the net earnings to worthy local projects. The earnings of some funds are designated for specific purposes, but undesignated funds produce investment income that can be given out in grants each year. The total of funds invested is now over $1.2 million, all from local donors.

Categories considered are social services, education, environment, healthcare, youth, seniors, and the arts, among others.

Projects receiving grants this year included Canyon Community Association for a new pavilion, Cresteramics for new doors, Creston Valley Community Housing Society to help reduce rents, Kootenai Community Centre Society for repairs to youth housing, Kootenay Regional Association for Community Living for its farm food program, Creston Museum for upgrades to storage areas, Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy for classroom tables, Trails for Creston Valley Society for a recreation site at the Goat River, and the Boswell Hall for a photocopier and projector.

CKF offers real alternatives for local investors who wish to keep their donations in this community to benefit causes now, and in the future. To find out more, visit www.ckfoundation.ca.
