Creston’s Citizens On Patrol (COPS), acting as “eyes and ears” for the RCMP, have noticed an increasing number of vehicles driving with one headlight burned out.

With longer night hours approaching, COPS would like to remind drivers to circle their vehicles and check that all lights are operating. Headlights show drivers the position of oncoming traffic, light up shoulders and ditches where pedestrians and wildlife may be, and give better distance vision to allow for safe emergency stops.

Patrollers will be recording licence numbers of vehicles with lights burned out, and reporting them to the RCMP. Police will then issue a warning letter, to give drivers a certain length of time to get the light replaced. After that time, if the vehicle’s light is not replaced, a fine may be levied.

Local dealerships sell the lights for prices averaging $20, and often can install them at no charge, depending on the make and model. Installation time can be only a few minutes, in most cases.

COPS is an organization of volunteers who work to keep our community safer for everyone. New members are always needed. For information, call Ken at 250-428-9584.
