Coolest place in the valley

The ice is in at the Creston and District Community Complex

Hot and tacky? Cranky and irritable? One fix is to come on down to the Community Complex; even if it’s just to wander around in a cooler climate, grab lunch or a snack from the concession or go for a cooling dip in the pool. Maybe just to sit in the lobby and check emails - the only downside is leaving and facing that blast outside like holding your head over the dishwasher just after it finishes and opening the door. If you want to be really cool, put on your shades and sit in the arena – with the ice surface now in, we’ll have you shivering in no time.

One initiative the RDCK has been working on for the past couple of years is the changeover to a new software system for all the Recreation Centres which replaces the old, unsupported CLASS system. Obviously, a major undertaking as the software handles all the registrations, facility rentals and Point of Sale transactions along with all the accounting and report generating. Staff at all facilities has been industriously working on the structuring and subsequent operation of the system and we are looking at rolling it out in a few weeks. While the changeover shouldn’t affect your experience at the front counter, if there is a hiccup or two, we ask for your patience as we train on the new system.

Speaking of front counter, by the time you read this, the Fall Leisure Guide should be online at www.rdck.ca to be followed by delivery to your mailbox sometime the week of August 20th. As I trumpet on every release, this one is chockablock with programs and events to educate and elucidate you. At great personal risk, I “borrowed” a copy from a programmer’s desk to leaf through and a few things jumped out at me. We have a page full of Dance; including Dance Barre and Shake It Latin Dance along with all the other favourites. Hey – we are offering fencing and not the kind that uses posts and barb wire. This is the real deal with both adult and children’s classes covering footwork, blade work, teamwork and some psychology. We have Pound Classes for teens or adults – this full body workout lets you rock out and become the music with specialized drumsticks. There is a ton of both dryland and aquatic programs and events up until the end of the year.

The 40 page Fall Leisure Guide covers all our Special Events and, since our Aquatic area is closed for the Annual Shutdown Aug 25th to Sep 7th, there are 2 pages of free programs for you to try in our Shutdown Showcase. This is your chance to try out some of the programs I just mentioned or other popular tried and true ones at no cost, no obligation, no downpayment. Just remember both the free and registered programs will fill up fast so don’t hesitate when you see something that intrigues you or what you think might make a nice gift for someone.
