Internationally-acclaimed animator Richard Reeves will be holding two, weekend-based workshops in Super 8 mm and 16 mm film animation leading up to the 7th Siding Festival of Film slated for Creston Nov. 15 -17.

The first is a one-day workshop on Oct. 26 for anyone interested in learning how to draw, paint or even scratch on 16 mm film as a way to create “cameraless” forms of animation.

The second is a two-day workshop Nov. 2-3 where participants will be provided Super 8 mm film cameras to shoot and develop black and white film into animated “stop action” sequences.

Reeves has taught workshops in Canada and abroad for decades, and to all ages, from kindergarten to the elderly.

“Participants will shoot the film, perhaps do some in-camera editing, and then after the film is shot we’ll hand-process the film,” said Reeves. “The cool thing about these workshops? Everyone always brings something different and interesting to the process.”

Animations produced will be shown at the 7th Siding Festival of Films Nov. 15-17. Reeves added the films will be shown at multiple locations, including Creston’s Tivoli Theatre and Erickson’s the Venue.

“We’re extremely grateful to both the Tivoli’s Bonnie Geddes and the Venue’s Rick Brown for the opportunity to show our projects at their locations,” said Reeves.

Prices for the one-day 16 mm workshop are $60 for Kootenay Film Society (KFS) members and $100 for non-members. The Super 8 mm workshop is $100 for KFS members and $120 for non-members. Members of the Venue Performing and Visual Arts Society will also get member rates.
