To the Editor:

Seniors, be aware that you could lose your driver’s licence sooner than you anticipated. ICBC is getting stricter in an unfair way as a local 84-year-old found out. He never had an accident but lost his licence.

I called up ICBC and explained that to most old seniors, their vehicle is their lifeline to get around and still have some independence. I also suggested to establish a limited licence for some handicapped people and seniors that allows daytime driving and only in a 10-kilometre distance.

This, at first, was a completely foreign concept to the office head. The person could not comprehend it and objected. But after explaining it again, to the person’s credit, he fully understood it an agreed.

As the driver’s licence is today, the 84-year-old was no entitled to drive all over B.C., nor is he capable. But he is qualified to drive with a limited licence in the Creston area he knows.

ICBC has a genuine interest and concern for all. So, seniors groups, write a letter with lots of signatures and addresses to make it acceptable. This may keep you driving five more years.
