Reynold "Ray" Joseph Schmalz

March 26, 1928 ~ February 6, 2017

"Safe in the arms of Jesus". With sadness we announce the passing of Reynold "Ray" Joseph Schmalz on February 6, 2017 in Port Alberni, BC at the age of 88.

Ray was born in Shellbrook, Saskatchewan on March 26, 1928. Survived by his loving family: son Jerry (Roxy) and daughter Wendy (Tony Wedam), grandchildren Vincent and Robyn (Brock Little) and three great-grandchildren, Logan, Morgan, and Dilynn. He is also survived by two sisters Selma Weiss and Ester (Harvey) Wendel, as well as many, many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his wife of 61 years Barbara Schmalz, three sisters and five brothers.

Ray was raised on a farm near Shellbrook, SK and married the love of his life Barbara on 11 July 1951 and started their family there. In 1955 they moved to Drayton Valley, AB and then in 1959 moved to Creston, BC where he and Barb lived and raised their family. He was a man of many talents and was always happiest when he was busy on projects, both large and small. A farmer at heart, he truly loved his herd of Charlois cattle.

He had many many friends and was known for his easy smile and twinkling eyes. He often could capture a passing stranger's life story in a moment and of course shared his many stories along the way.

A memorial service will be held on March 26, 2017 at 2 pm at New Life Christian Church, 1821 Elm St, Creston, BC with Hon. Stockwell Day and Pastor Wayne Larson (both nephews) officiating. Tea to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gideons or to the BC Cancer Agency.
