Hazel Ulmer (nee Howie)


With love, wonderful memories, and sadness, family members say good-bye to Mary Hazel Ulmer (nee Howie). Hazel died on March 10, 2011, at the age of 89.


She was born near Simpson, SK, and resided in Imperial, SK, for many years until moving to Creston, BC, in 2006.


Hazel will be missed by her daughter Patricia Bertrand; son Howie (Bonnie); daughter Joan (Terry) O'Connor; son Dean (Margaret); son Jay; and son Rod (Barb); her grandchildren Chris (Shelly); Jason (Heather); Vanessa (Darren) Bishop; Andrea Ulmer and fiancé Don Casey; Dustin and fiancé Amanda Sandau; great-grandson Cole Casey; sisters-in-law Agnes (Bob) McIntosh, Agnes Ulmer, and Gerda; brother-in-law Harry (Louise); as well as cousin and close friend Meta Rizer; and many other cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.


Hazel will be remembered for her friendly, caring, and generous nature. Over the years, Hazel enjoyed attending her children's and grandchildren's events and community functions; baking; sewing; making quilts and afghans; listening to music; watching curling, football, and the Olympics; reading; going for drives in the country; and visiting and laughing with family and friends. Hazel was also a member of the Eastern Star, the Imperial United Church Women's Auxiliary, and a Secret Grandmother.


Hazel was predeceased by her parents, Dalton and Janet (nee McArton); husband of 54 years, Fred; sisters-in-law Lilly, Jean, Marie, Violet, Erma, Edna, Betty, and Annie; brothers-in-law George, Leo, Oscar, Bob, Ed, and Art; son-in-law John; cousin Bruce Howie; dear friend Helen Hill; and beloved dog Buffy.


The Family would like to thank Dr. Griffioen and the staff at Swan Valley Lodge for the wonderful care provided to Hazel.

At Hazel's request, there will be no funeral. A private gathering will be held at the family farm at a later date.
