Creston RCMP responded to 50 calls for assistance from November 14-20, Cpl. Darren Kakuno said on Tuesday. The dominant issues of the week were disputes on 16th Avenue South and semis struggling with icy road conditions.

November 14

• Patrolling officers noted a car idling near Cedar Street at 16th Avenue South and stopped to check on the driver. He was in medical distress and taken to hospital by ambulance. The man died the following day from a pre-existing medical condition.

November 15

• When police located a male who was the subject of several calls, he was walking on 10th Avenue North wearing a medieval crusader costume as part of a role-playing game. He was not carrying weapons or committing offenses, and was allowed to proceed.

• A fresh snowfall on Kootenay Pass caused havoc for transport trucks. A westbound semi driver attempted to drive over the pass without chains and slid into the oncoming lane, forcing other semis to become immobilized on the treacherous road. A number of trucks had to be towed.

November 16

• A tractor trailer jackknifed on Highway 3A, partially blocking the highway.

• Police were called to an ongoing neighbours’ dispute on 16th Avenue South but determined no criminal offenses had been committed.

• A tow truck operating on Kootenay Pass with its lights flashing was rear-ended by a semi and pushed into a snow bank. Both trucks remained drivable and no major injuries were reported.

November 17

• A semi that jackknifed on Highway 3 in Yahk blocked the road and had to be towed.

• A driver sustained minor injuries after rolling his Ford Escape on Riondel Road near Highway 3A.

November 18

• Police were called to a dispute between tenants of a 16th Avenue South residence. They provided conflicting versions of their dispute, but agreed to stay away from each other. No charges are being pursued.

• Police responded to a report that four people were attempting to steal a car at a service station in Yahk. The vehicle in question was located on Highway 3, and police were able to confirm the occupant’s story that they had permission to take the vehicle.

• When an officer stopped a vehicle for speeding on Highway 21 in Lister the driver exhibited signs of impairment. He failed a roadside screening test and was issued a 90-day driving prohibition. The vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

November 19

• Police are monitoring the situation after again being called about a disturbance involving tenants at a 16th Avenue South residence. The tenants had been yelling at each other but had separated before police arrived.

November 20

• A driver who failed to stop at a school bus displaying flashing lights and a stop sign on Cook Street now faces charges for the offence. Kakuno reminds readers that drivers in both directions must stop for a stopped bus that has signals flashing and a stop sign extended.

• Two men involved in an argument over a vehicle at a 16th Avenue South residence agreed to go their separate ways and avoid contact with each other.
