Public to join search for missing Nelson man

The public will now be allowed to join the search for Alvin Dunic, the Nelson man who went missing on Monday in the Crawford Bay area.

A notice from Search and Rescue issued yesterday sets out specific requirements about who may search and when.

The search will take place Saturday, June 3 and on Sunday, June 4, from 9:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Searchers must register at the Crawford Bay School at 9:30 a.m. each day and must check out each day.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and capable of a minimum of six hours of sustained physical activity. They must show picture ID and the following gear is mandatory: long pants, long sleeves, hiking boots, bug spray, sunscreen, eye protection, food, and water. Volunteers will be turned away if they are lacking any of these.

The notice also that there is no parking available at the school. Bus transportation will be provided from the Kootenay Bay ferry terminal at 8:45 a.m. and from the school at 4:45 p.m.

Dunic left the school before noon on Monday to look for a suitable location for a class project, and was expected to return half an hour later, but did not.

Police were alerted at 2:45 p.m., and co-workers found his unlocked vehicle on Woolgar Rd. at the Crawford Creek trailhead.

Trained rescue personnel have been searching since then, including 20 Search and Rescue technicians, two search dog teams, a fixed wing aircraft and five divers.
