Each year a local resident who has made great contributions to the community is honoured at the annual Creston Valley Blossom Festival.

The Creston Valley Rotary Club, which co-ordinates the selection of Creston’s citizen of the year, is once again inviting nominations for worthy candidates.

“This is a pretty big deal,” Rotarian John Huscroft said. “It’s an honour to be chosen from thousands of your friends and neighbours.”

Nominees’ activities can include volunteer work or significant contributions to business, government, social improvement, community service, cultural arts, religion, youth work or any other endeavour that helps make the Creston Valley a better community.

An anonymous group of committee members considers nominations that must include details of accomplishments, involvement and contributions to the community. The nomination package can include testimonials from other residents.

“We recommend creating a submission that assumes the committee members know nothing about a candidate,” Huscroft said. “Include information that creates a compelling reason for your nominee to be considered.”

Nomination forms are available at the Creston Valley Advance, Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce or Creston Town Hall. Submissions should be placed in a sealed envelope marked “Citizen of the Year – Confidential” and dropped off at the above locations or mailed to Creston Valley Advance, P.O. Box 1279, Creston, BC, V0B 1G0. Deadline for nominations, which must be signed by the submitter, is May 4 at noon.

Announcement of the 2012 citizen of the year will be made during the opening ceremonies for the Blossom Festival on May 18. The citizen (or citizens) of the year are then invited to ride in the May 19 parade.
