Money lost in CRA phone scam

Missing kayaks, paddle board, TransAm and a bridge.

A local resident got caught in the Canada Revenue Agency telephone scam last week and lost a significant amount of money in the process, Staff Sgt. Darryl Hammond said on Monday.

“It’s sad when this happens and of course it is usually vulnerable people,” he said. “It is extremely important for people not to provide information or even respond to demands made over the telephone.”

In other police news, Creston RCMP responded to 93 calls for service from August 22-28, Hammond said.

August 22

•Two orange 8-foot Pelican kayaks and a red Inukshuk paddle board were reported stolen from a seasonal residence on Sanca Park Road.

•An Erickson resident reported the theft of a camouflage-pattern tarp valued at $10.

•In the absence of an owner, police seized a dog on Northwest Boulevard that was reported to have been howling and barking for five days. When the owner returned he got into a heated dispute with others in the neighborhood. The issue remains under investigation.

•A botanist working in the Topaz Creek forest service road area got a surprise when he started out for home. The bridge that he had crossed in his vehicle was no longer there, having been removed for repair. He had to find his way out on foot.

•Police were unable to find anyone in the area when a 12th Avenue North resident complained about a suspicious vehicle.

August 23

•A vehicle reported last week to have been abandoned in the Sanca Creek area was again reported, but still on private property. The owner, when contacted, said it ran out of gas, but Hammond said it will probably end up being towed for scrap.

•A Canyon Street resident was caught in an apparent phone scam from someone purporting to be from Corrections Canada. Credit card information was provided.

•A neighbours’ dispute over the placement of tree stumps was reported on North Goat River Road.

•A young male reported to be screaming at a female was gone, as was the female, when police arrived at the Canyon Street location.

•A complaint about threats was made from Ibbitson Street.

•A child custody dispute was reported on Hood Road.

•Garbage left in a pile on 9th Avenue South was possibly part of a dispute between neighbours, Hammond said.

•A caller was warned after police received a complaint from Highway 21 about harassing phone calls.

•Two females who appeared to have disappeared in choppy waters off Twin Bays had made their way safely to shore in high winds.

August 24

•A report of a drunk on the road and a truck spinning tires was made from 44th Street but police found neither.

•When police found the person reported to be shooting a pellet gun near Mallory Road he said he was shooting it in a safe manner.

•A Coleman tent trailer left near Riondel forest service road last year was found in a pile of burnt rubbish.

•When police attended a reported altercation at the old ferry landing they determined the fight was consensual.

•A driver reported being forced off the road by a dump truck on Highway 3 near Irishman Creek Bridge.

August 25

•Police were called to dispatch an injured deer on Northwest Boulevard.

•The subject of a well-being check on 10th Avenue North was found to be okay.

•A dog was reported to be aggressive to cyclists in the 1000 block of Highway 21.

•A vehicle with Alberta plates was reported to be doing burnouts on Regina Street at 10th Avenue North.

•A wallet found on Elm Street was returned to the owner.

•A person reported to be driving while impaired on 20th Avenue South was located, but not while driving, and charges could not be pursued.

•A wallet left at the Visitors Information Centre was returned to the owner.

August 26

•A Highway 3A resident reported being awakened by the sound of a vehicle driving off with his trailer upon which was a blue Polaris 1000 cc Side x Side with gun rack.

•A complaint about a vehicle passing on the right was made from Canyon Street.

•When police got a complaint about two young children walking alone on Erickson Road they determined the kids’ father was nearby.

•An unwelcome male was reported at a Northwest Boulevard residence.

•A female was arrested after assaulting another female on Elm Street. She was released on promise to appear in court.

•Three “rude and disrespectful” males, possibly impaired, were reported in a boat   at Walker’s Landing.

•A reported break and entry, “sometime in the last eight years,” on 38th Avenue was solved when police determined other family members had been cleaning out the structure without the owner’s knowledge.

•A vehicle struck two parked cars in the 16th Avenue South area and was located immediately. The driver was issued a 90-day driving prohibition for driving under the influence of alcohol and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

August 27

•The owner of a reportedly erratic black TransAm was located and warned.

•Two pickup trucks were reported to be speeding and passing on double solid lines on the way to Kootenay Lake ferry terminal.

•An intoxicated male was refusing to leave an Elm Street residence.

August 28

•An intoxicated male who made threats to harm was arrested on Mallory Road. He was released with a court date pending.

•A check stop set up because of a large party at Foster and Lakeview-Arrow Creek Roads resulted in the seizure of a small quantity of drugs from a vehicle.

•Police could find no evidence when a resident reported a suspicious person in a carport.
