Drivers just don’t seem to be getting it, says RCMP

“Driver’s just don’t seem to be getting it,” Sgt. Dave Nassichuk said on Tuesday, pointing out that Creston RCMP have ticketed at least 15 drivers using cell phones in the last two months.

“And, obviously, there must be many more who are not getting caught, and they are a danger to the public,” he said.

Drivers using electronic devices are subject to fines for distracted driving.

Nassichuk said Creston RCMP members responded to 75 calls for service from June 27 to July 3.

June 27

• Two dogs running loose in Riondel attacked a small dog being walked by two children. The small dog sustained injuries.

• A driver who sped through a construction zone on Highway 3 near Kootenay Pass was given a ticket.

• Two motorcycles collided, causing minor damage, in the 1400 block of Northwest Boulevard. No injuries were reported.

• An American visitor left his passport on the Osprey ferry.

• A 90-year-old male died suddenly in his 9th Avenue South home of apparent natural causes.

June 28

• A man kayaking near Riondel was reported as possibly being missing, but he was out of the cell phone service area and reported his safety a short time later.

• A vehicle backed up into another vehicle on Erickson Road at 16th Avenue South in an effort to avoid an oncoming semi that was making the sharp turn. The semi driver was issued a ticket.

• A 4-door sedan driver was reported to have nearly forced a bicyclist off of Canyon-Lister Road. Police have sent the owner of the vehicle a warning letter.

• Charges are pending following a drug seizure at Kingsgate border crossing.

• An intoxicated female who was refusing to leave a downtown pub was gone when police arrived.

June 29

• Police received a complaint that an apparently overloaded Alberta vehicle was swaying over the centre line, creating a danger on Railway Avenue in Yahk.

• Patrols were unable to locate a male reported to be exposing himself in a Cook Street parking lot.

• More than $1,000 in damage was reported when mailboxes were vandalized in West Creston.

• A motorcyclist suffered minor injuries when he ditched his bike to avoid colliding with a vehicle on 36th Avenue South at Erickson Road. The vehicle driver was ticketed.

• A cell phone found in West Creston was returned to the owner.

• A vehicle that collided with a deer on Highway 21 South sustained more than $1,000 in damage.

• A male was arrested and has a court date pending after a domestic assault in Kingsgate.

June 30

• Investigating police concluded that a reported robbery on Canyon-Lister Road did not happen. Alcohol was a factor in the complaint.

• Minor damage resulted when a vehicle collided with a deer on Highway 3A near Gray Creek.

• The owner of a loud vehicle in the 1100 block of 11th Avenue South has been advised about a noise complaint made to police.

July 1

• Police located ATV riders who were the subject of a complaint, and warned them to use helmets and stay off public roads.

• A van sustained minor damage when it collided with a deer on Highway 3 north of Yahk.

• A driver clocked at doing 150 km/h in a 100 zone on Highway 3 east of Creston was charged with excessive speeding and his vehicle was impounded for 7 days.

• A male will have his day in court after damaging an Ash Street apartment door with a hammer.

July 2

• A party of youths was the subject of a complaint on Cook Street but police could not locate anyone in the area.

• The owner of a lost iPhone 4 found on the Community Complex playing field can claim it at the police station.

• A car collided with a bear in Yahk. The occupants were not injured and the bear was not to be found when police arrived.

• A vehicle stopped on Highway 3 in Erickson for having no insurance was found to be in the control of a male who had consumed alcohol. The driver refused to provide a breath sample and was given a 90-day driving prohibition. The vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

• Police were unable to locate a motorcycle reported to be going at least 150 km/h on Highway 3 in Erickson.

• Police were unable to determine the source of a possible explosion reported in Erickson.

July 3

• A slow driver on Erickson Road was stopped and explained she was looking at the cherry crop.

• A driver lost control on the shoulder of Highway 3A north of Wynndel, hit the rocks on the right side and then caromed across the road and rolled down the embankment. The vehicle was totaled but no injuries were reported. The driver was ticketed.

• Residents in the 700 block of Hillside Street co-operated by turning the music down when informed about a noise complaint.
