Drivers impaired by alcohol and marijuna plague police

Among the 52 RCMP files last week were driving prohibitions and charges for people who were under the influence of alcohol or marijuana.

Drivers under the influence of alcohol and marijuana drew the attention of police last week, Cpl. Darren Kakuno said on Tuesday. Creston RCMP responded to 52 calls for assistance from October 31-November 6, he said.

October 31

• A check stop on Erickson Road did not find any drivers committing offences.

• A driver stopped on 10th Avenue North showed signs of impairment. He failed a roadside screening test and was issued a 90-day driving prohibition. The vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

November 1

• A driver of a truck on Northwest Boulevard failed to stop for police, and continued on to Hilton Place, where he left the vehicle and urinated on a bush. When informed he was an impaired driver suspect he was uncooperative and resisted arrest. He was taken into custody and held until sober, and now faces charges.

• A pedestrian was taken to hospital with undetermined injuries after being struck by a vehicle in a crosswalk at Vancouver Street and 10th Avenue North. The driver remained at the scene was given a ticket for driving without due care.

• Police located a suspected impaired driver who was reported to be driving on the wrong side of the road and narrowly missing oncoming vehicles on Kootenay Pass. The attending officer noted marijuana products in the vehicle and the driver admitted to consuming edible marijuana products. He was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition and the vehicle was impounded.

November 2

• When police investigated a complaint about threatening text messages they determined the messages were not criminal in nature.

November 3

• A driver sustained minor injuries when he lost control of his truck and slid into the ditch on Highway 21 at Erickson Road.

November 4

• Police got conflicting information from people involved in an altercation on Lakeview-Arrow Creek Road. They agreed to part ways.

• A male was arrested for assault and held in custody after an incident on Birch Street. Charges are pending.

• A driver lost control of her car and slid into a ditch on Highway 3A. She was not injured but the vehicle had to be towed.

November 5

• A 28-year-old male wanted on outstanding warrants was arrested and held in custody pending a court appearance.

• Driving 116 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on Erickson Road earned a driver a ticket for excessive speed and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.
