The Creston Valley Services Committee has recommended a transfer of the lease of space in the community complex to the new owners of Creston Physioworks & More.

“Our working relationship with the former owners (Mike and Candace Foy) has been very good,” said Randy Fediuk, manager of recreation at Creston & District Community Complex. “I think the situation has been very successful.”

Creston Physioworks & More has been a tenant since the addition of an aquatic centre and major upgrades to the complex were completed.

New owners are Michael Kietzman and Catherine Zimmer, who was an employee of the business prior to their purchase.

CVSC members—Regional Directors Larry Binks, Tanya Wall and Garry Jackman, and Creston Mayor Ron Toyota—agreed to the recommendation, which now goes to the full RDCK board for ratification. The current lease runs through February 29, 2021.

• Appearing as a delegation, Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce manager Vern Gorham outlined plans to hold a major slopitch event in the first week of June.

“We are hosting our first annual National Slopitch Association event, a Canadian World Series qualifying tournament on June 1, 2 and 3,” he said. “We are hoping to have around 500 people come to Creston for that 3-day period, which will have a significant economic spinoff.”

In addition to the tournament, Gorham said, musical entertainment, beer gardens, a dance and fair/market are planned.

While many of the logistics have yet to be finalized, including the viability of holding events on the soccer field, directors expressed cautious support for the event, with Jackman explaining the application for funding process from each local RDCK region.

Wall said that she would be more likely to offer financial support if the community associations in Area B are involved in the events.

• Written reports were received from Creston Valley Public Library and local RDCK emergency coordinator Alanna Garrett.

• The unusually short public meeting ended when committee members moved into a closed meeting.
