A car stolen in Cranbrook ended up in Kootenay Lake near Boswell, about 50 kilometers north of Creston, on Friday evening, with two passengers injured.

Creston RCMP were first alerted to a problem when a report of a vehicle speeding and being driven dangerously came in from Highway 3 at Yahk. It was determined at that time that the vehicle had been stolen.

A second complaint about the same vehicle came from Northwest Boulevard, with a report that it was swerving in an erratic manner.

“Then we got a call that what turned out to be the same vehicle had gone off the road and into the lake,” RCMP Staff Sgt. Darryl Hammond said on Monday.

Police suspect the driver was impaired, but he wasn’t found in the vehicle and charges on that issue might not be feasible. He does face charges of possession of stolen property and, with two passengers injured, dangerous driving causing bodily harm.
