Photographer and mountain climber Pat Morrow (above) and singer-songwriter Mark Koenig visited Trevor Marzke’s grade 4/5 class at Yaqan Nukiy School.

Our teacher told us Pat Morrow and a special guest were coming to our classroom. Pat Morrow is a photographer and an awesome mountain climber. He climbed Mount Everest. It took him 90 days to climb that incredible mountain.

Mark Koenig is a country singer and mountain climber. When he was a little kid he wanted to be a guitarist. Mark wrote a song about Conrad Kain.

Conrad Kain climbed 80 peaks. Every step Conrad took it could have cost him his life because his equipment was not like the high tech equipment we have now. He climbed 100 years ago. Conrad had a park named after him named Conrad Kain Centennial Park. The presentation was so awesome!

We were so excited when Pat Morrow and Mark Koenig walked into our classroom. They got our attention. Pat Morrow started talking about Conrad Kain and mountain climbing. Conrad Kain was a famous mountain climber in the early 1900s. He wore boots with nails stuck in them and a leather coat when he climbed. At the end of the presentation Mark Koenig sang two songs. One of the songs was about Conrad Kain and the other one was about kids. The songs were awesome. After that we could ask questions and I asked how long it took to climb Mount Everest. It took fifty days. Then we said goodbye and they left. I learned a lot from them about Conrad Kain and the beautiful mountains around us.

Pat Morrow and Mark Koenig came to Yaqan Nukiy School. Pat Morrow gave us an introduction to his climbing experiences. He was a photographer on the Canadian Everest expedition. He even showed us a picture of his frost-bitten toes from a cold climbing trip.  Mark Koenig played and sang a song about Conrad Kain. Conrad Kain was a European mountain guide who came to Canada and pioneered mountain climbing in the Rockies and the Purcells. These men taught me that no journey is too big to accomplish if you show perseverance.
