Creston Valley residents are in for a rare treat on Sunday when an international piano trio with a local flavor performs at PCSS Auditorium.

Amanda Anderson, back home in Creston on a year’s sabbatical from her work as a cellist in Hanover, Germany’s NDR Radiophilharmonie, will be joined by her friends and colleagues Sophia Pantzier on violin and Florian von Radowitz on piano.

Trio von Radowitz was formed in 2015 when von Radowitz and Anderson, who had performed together for over a decade, invited Pantzier to join them to form a piano trio.

Anderson said on Monday that convincing her friends to fly from Germany was unnecessary.

“They told me I should organize a concert tour for them before I came back last summer!” she laughed. In addition to the Creston date, Trio von Radowitz will move on to perform in Cranbrook United Church on Monday and Nelson’s St. Saviour’s Pro-Cathedral on Tuesday.

Von Radowitz, Anderson said, will be familiar to the Creston audience, having performed with her here in 2009 and also as a soloist earlier in the decade.

“We played in the Mountainview Festival in Calgary together when he was here last, too,” she said. “Sophie and I play together in Hanover and we get along really well. She has become a good friend.”

The trio toured Germany last year.

“We had a great time,” Anderson said.

Von Radowitz and Pantzier were scheduled to arrive at Calgary International Airport on Wednesday, leaving three days for the trio to practice before the public performances.

“We have performed the Beethoven and Dvorak works together, but we are adding some Mendelssohn pieces, which are really beautiful to celebrate spring with. It’s nice to do something new together.”

Since returning to Creston last summer, Anderson has been a familiar sight around the area, performing with a variety of musicians, including her father, Monte. On Saturday she played her cello at Kootenay Meadows Farm in Lister for the annual Spring Turn Out, in which the farm’s dairy cows are released into the pasture for the first time since fall.

“I have really enjoyed being able to give back to the community where I grew up and which I really love,” she smiled.

The Trio von Radowitz concert is scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at Black Bear Books.
