Crestonite Joel Cook recently completed his first solo flight at the Boundary County Airport.

BOUNDARY COUNTY, Idaho — “Yes!” exclaimed Brigham Steed after successfully completing his first solo airplane landing on Dec. 9 at the Boundary County Airport.

The Creston resident went on to make nine more landings to solidify the experience. Colder than standard temperature actually enhanced airplane performance the day of his flight.

Prior to the solo flight, Steed’s Northern Air flight instructor Nathaniel Cheshire asked him if he was comfortable going on his own. In response, Steed said, “There’s no time like the present.”

Steed’s next step is learning specialty takeoffs and landings on short or soft runways. Brigham enrolled in the private pilot ground school class that began last month at Northern Air and plans to continue his training in hopes of a flying career, which is off to a great start.

A day earlier, 18-year-old Joel Cook from Creston accomplished his first solo flight at the Boundary County Airport. No one could wipe the smile off his face.

Cook, an enthusiastic student of aviation, attended the private pilot ground school class offered by Northern Air and is training in a four-place Cessna 172. Before the flight, Cook removed his coat and stayed cool while performing in subzero temperatures.

“Cool” Cook’s next step is taking the private pilot knowledge test, and will soon enjoy the reward of carrying passengers wherever his wings may go.
